Fun Family Activities You Can Do in Your Backyard

It’s finally that time of year in Arizona—when the weather has cooled down enough that we can get outside and enjoy our backyards again! After a long summer spent inside with the air conditioning, we’re all ready for a little more outdoor fun.

Here are some ideas of fun backyard activities the whole family can enjoy.

Outdoor games

Fun outdoor games are a must-have for any backyard. If you have a big yard, croquet and frisbee are classic, family-friendly games. If you’re a little tighter on space, there are still plenty of games to choose from, including cornhole, bocce ball, and lawn bowling. Oversized “stack and tumble tower” games or outdoor “4-in-a-row” games can also be found at many stores, and are great for all ages.

Sports court

If you want to take your outdoor games to the next level, and you have the room for it, adding a sports court is an incredible way to upgrade your outdoor space. A sports court allows you to play basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, or pickleball in your own backyard.

Backyard campfire

You don’t have to go camping to enjoy a good old-fashioned campfire. All you need is a backyard fire pit and some chairs! Whether you just gather round and sing songs, or go all out with roasting hot dogs and making s’mores, this is one way to get the family out into the backyard together.

Outdoor movie

Take the big screen outdoors for a fun backyard movie night. The best way to do this is arguably with a projector and screen (there are plenty of inflatable options that are very affordable!) but even an old TV will do. Pull some cushions and blankets outside, pop some popcorn, and enjoy a family movie under the stars.

Whether you have an outdoor kitchen and dining area to cook and eat a full meal outside, or you just grab takeout and a picnic blanket, enjoying a meal outside together is always a fun family activity. Invite some neighbors over and make it a multi-family party!

Hot tub

If you already have a hot tub as part of your built-in swimming pool, then this one is a no brainer! But if you’ve been thinking about adding a stand-alone hot tub to your backyard, there’s no better time to do it. This is something your family will enjoy year round, even on the chilliest winter nights!

There are plenty of family activities to enjoy in your backyard this season and all year long. Now get outside and have some fun!
