Things to Consider When Purchasing Outdoor Furniture

Outdoor furniture can add a lot to your outdoor living possibilities, but it can also be a big investment. For that reason, it is definitely worth putting some thought into the decision before you hit “add to cart.”

Here are some of the main things to consider when shopping for and purchasing outdoor furniture.

What will you use it for?

The first step is creating a vision for your backyard furniture. What do you want to use it for? Do you need dining furniture only, or do you also want a seating area for conversation? How much seating will you need for your family and/or guests?

This will help you determine what pieces you’re looking for (table, dining chairs, sofas, lounges, armchairs, etc.) which will be crucial as you move into the actual planning phases.

Where will you put it?

Before you start shopping, you need to consider how much space you have—and what that space looks like. You’ll want to place your furniture on a hardscape area (concrete or pavers) for stability, cleanliness, and comfort. Do you already have such an area? If not, where could you put one?

Measure the space (and if necessary, tape it out) so you can see how much room you have for your furniture. Compare how much space you have with how much space you would need to bring your vision to life, and make adjustments accordingly.

Name your style.

The shopping process will be a whole lot easier if you can name what style of furniture you are looking for. Do you like traditional colors and shapes, or more modern silhouettes? Find some images of traditional, modern, contemporary, transitional, mid-century, and tropical furniture styles to help guide your shopping.

Can it handle the heat?

When shopping for outdoor furniture in Phoenix, there’s really one thing to consider above all else: how will it handle the heat? Ideally, you want durable, well-made, weather-resistant materials that won’t fade or warp. High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) wood or wicker is a fantastic option. (Keep in mind that while metal is super durable, it will get unbearably hot in the summer months.)

How heavy is it?

Solid furniture that won’t blow away in the next monsoon is a must. Look for well-constructed pieces with a good weight to make sure everything stays put.

With or without cushions?

This is an age-old debate that you’ll have to decide for yourself. While outdoor furniture with cushions is undoubtedly more comfortable (and most would argue, more stylish), you’ll also have to deal with keeping the cushions clean and protected from the elements. Furniture sans cushions may be easier to take care of, but also might not fit the aesthetic or comfort level you’re going for. There’s no right or wrong answer here; it’s really just a matter of preference!

Now that you know what you consider when purchasing outdoor furniture, you’re well equipped to make an informed decision and buy furniture that will truly work for you and your outdoor space. Happy shopping!
