Most people think about beauty first when it comes to their landscaping, but the plants you grow in your yard can be both beautiful and functional—without a lot of excess work on your part.
Today we are highlighting some edible plants that are easy to grow.
Fruits and vegetables
Let’s start with some of the more traditional edible plants available to home gardeners: fruits and vegetables. While there will always be some amount of prep work and care that goes into growing these foods in your backyard (especially in a climate like Arizona’s!), there are some options that are easier to grow than others, namely:
- Strawberries
- Tomatoes
- Peppers
- Zucchini/squash
- Peppers
- Carrots
Additionally, citrus trees are fairly easy to grow and maintain in Arizona, and they will produce lots of delicious oranges, lemons, limes, or grapefruits year after year. Citrus trees also add lush greenery and height to your landscaping, so they are a fantastic option for any Arizona yard.
Herbs
The nice thing about growing herbs is that you don’t need a ton of space to do it. You can even grow them without an outdoor garden, since they can easily grow in pots. Some of the easiest herbs to grow are:
- Mint
- Sage
- Parsley
- Basil
- Cilantro
- Chives
Other
If you want to get more creative with your edible garden, here are some more “out of the box” plants that are easy to grow:
- Wheatgrass
- Sprouts
- Amaranth
- Edible flowers (dandelions, pansies, etc.)
- Prickly pear cactus
